using the example of the world-famous Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen
One of the most common arguments from astrology skeptics goes like this: “How can astrology possibly work if there are brothers and sisters who are twins, born almost at the same time, but live completely different lives?”
In Vedic astrology, there are at least five factors that clarify this situation. Below, we will examine them using the example of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

The sisters are known for their television careers and as style icons who reached the peak of their popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They were born two minutes apart, and in this article we will look at how this small difference in birth time affected their natal charts, as well as the similarities and differences in their destinies. At first glance, the sisters’ charts look identical and are shown below.

Overall, it is worth noting that both sisters’ charts indicate high social status, material well-being, and strong creative potential. Among the key factors are:
- Venus in the 1st house — artistry and attractiveness
- Sun in the 11th house — ambition and social recognition
- Moon in Magha nakshatra — “royal” heritage and the power of the lineage
- Mercury in its own sign — intellect and self-expression
- 5th–11th house axis occupied by planets — creativity and popularity
- Vargottama Mars as the ruler of the 5th and 10th houses — realization through creativity and career
- Connection of the 2nd and 11th houses with the 1st house of personality — income, support, and status
These placements gave their fruit during the corresponding astrological periods.

Houses of Siblings and the Bhavat Bhavam Theory
In any pair of twins, one is always older and the other younger. This already influences the dynamic between them.
In Vedic astrology, the 3rd house is responsible for younger siblings, while the 11th house is connected to older brothers and sisters. When analyzing a chart, the question of whether the inquiry concerns an older or younger sibling determines which house to examine. This leads to different interpretations even with identical charts.
The assessment of events and situations related to a sibling in a person’s life will differ depending on whether that sibling is older or younger. For example, if the brother is older, the astrologer will carefully analyze the 11th house at the time of the consultation; if younger — the 3rd house. This alone already changes the reading.
This naturally ties into the concept of bhavat bhavam (“house from house”), according to which the birth chart can be analyzed starting from point of view of any house — for instance, to understand the fate of an important person in your life.
If we are examining the fate of a younger twin sibling, the chart pattern is read by taking the 3rd house as the 1st. It is important to note that this will be the chart of their destiny in relation to the person asking, not an independent reading of their personality.
This principle explains why the Olsen sisters have such different characters and lifestyles.
Let’s look at the sisters’ natal chart from the 11th house to get a portrait of Ashley — the older sister:
- Most planets are on the left (dark) side of the chart (1st–6th houses) → focus on the inner world.
- Lord of the chart Venus in the 3rd house in Cancer → introversion, orientation toward personal effort, creativity, and intellect.
- Moon in the 4th house → emotional comfort, mental and emotional resources are replenished at home, among family and loved ones.
- Even the Sun in the 1st house in Taurus under Saturn’s aspect → soft, restrained, as if with muted brightness.

Ashley leads a very private life: she finished her filming earlier than Mary-Kate, secretly married artist Louis Eisner in a private ceremony, and became a mother in 2023. Today her focus is family and business. In the eyes of the public, she is a reserved intellectual.
Now, let’s look at the portrait of Mary-Kate by taking the 3rd house of younger siblings as the 1st house:
- Planets are on the right (bright) side of the chart → focus on external realization in society.
- Chart lord in the 10th house in Gemini → publicity, career, and social status as the main priority in life.
- Mercury under aspects from Mars (8th lord) and Jupiter in the 6th house → impulsive, rebellious personality, fame through scandals.
- Venus in the 11th house → artistic and social circle of communication.
- Moon in the 12th house → inner drama, psychosomatic issues.

Mary-Kate is public and noticeable: the face of the brand The Row, ex-wife of Olivier Sarkozy, frequent guest at social events like the Met Gala. She is active in the art scene. Her image is that of a muse and a rebel.

The Sign and Nakshatra of the Ascendant and/or Moon
If twins are born during a change of the ascendant sign, even 5–7 minutes can result in a different 1st house. One may be born with Leo rising, the other with Virgo. This radically changes the chart patterns: the placement of planets in houses, their strength, and their influence on different areas of life.
The ascendant sign changes approximately every two hours, sometimes more frequently — every 20–30 minutes. Therefore, twins being born with different rising signs is not that uncommon.
An even more likely scenario is different nakshatras for the ascendant.
A nakshatra is a lunar constellation within the zodiac. Each sign contains parts of three nakshatras in different proportions.
If both twins have Cancer rising, but one is in Pushya and the other in Ashlesha, their characters will differ: one will be caring and gentle, the other perceptive and prone to manipulation.
In rarer cases, the Moon can also change sign or nakshatra within the time gap between the twins’ births. Different Moon signs or nakshatras mean a different perception of the world. This, in turn, leads to different decisions and, as a result, different life events.
In the case of Mary-Kate and Ashley, the ascendant remained in the same sign and nakshatra, but the one-degree shift of the ascendant for Mary-Kate led to a completely different karma regarding marriage and life path. More on this in the next section.

Divisional Charts
Divisional charts (vargas) provide a deeper reading of specific areas of life: marriage, spiritual path, career, health, and so on.
They are highly sensitive to time because they are built on the smaller fragments of the birth chart. For example, the Navamsa ascendant (D9) — the chart of marriage and spiritual path — changes every 13–15 minutes.
A birth time difference of 1–30 minutes means that the divisional charts can differ, and with them, the karma in key life areas.
The higher the number of the divisional chart, the greater its sensitivity to time. D12 (family karma) changes its ascendant every 10 minutes, D24 (education) — every 6–7 minutes.
Even if the twins have an identical D1 birth chart, the vargas show that they may be guided by different subconscious programs and live out the karma of different areas of life in their own way.
The karma of marriage and the path of development are themes of the D9 chart, and they differ for the sisters. That is why their personal lives have such significant differences.
Ashley got married
on December 28, 2022 — shortly after the beginning of the Ketu sub-period in the major period of the Moon. In August 2023, during the Moon–Venus period, she gave birth to a son.
The Moon, as the ruler of her ascendant (Cancer), activates the personal chart, while Venus — the dispositor of Ketu and a planet placed in the 1st house — makes fateful events related to marriage and childbirth possible. These are themes traditionally reflected by the Moon and Venus.
The astrological picture is further supported by:
- Transit of Saturn, ruler of the 7th house, through the 7th house itself (marriage);
- Return of the Rahu and Ketu axis to their natal positions (Aries–Libra), which strengthens the effect of nodal turning points.

However, only Ashley got married at this time — confirmation of the event is found in the sisters’ Navamsa charts.

Ashley’s Navamsa

Mary-Kate’s Navamsa
In Ashley’s D9, the Moon aspects the 1st house, and the dispositor of Ketu (the planet of the active sub-period) — Mars — is placed in the same house in a marriage giving 1/7 relationship to the Moon. Additionally, Ketu is in Scorpio in the 12th house —one of its meanings is secrets — which symbolically reflects the private nature of the ceremony.
In Mary-Kate’s D9, Ketu and its dispositor are not connected with the 1st or 7th house, so this period did not bring her a similar event.
Her marriage took place earlier — in November 2015. The ceremony occurred during the Moon–Moon–Rahu period and took place under less favorable astrological indicators, such as Venus’s debilitation and unfavorable transits of Jupiter and Saturn for Mary-Kate.
In Mary-Kate’s D9, the Moon rules the 7th house of marriage, and Rahu aspects the 1st house — which could have contributed to entering marriage. The lord of D9 — Saturn — is exalted in the 10th house, indicating the high status and public nature of her partner. Indeed, Mary-Kate’s husband was Olivier Sarkozy — an influential public figure in France.
However, the union was short-lived: in 2020 she filed for divorce. This happened during the Moon–Saturn–Mercury period. The planets are connected with the 6th house in D9 — the related to conflicts, legal matters and loss of marriage — which confirms the divorce.

Planetary Periods
At the moment of birth, a specific planetary period is activated — it depends on the position of the Moon in the sign and nakshatra. The Moon moves quickly, and even a couple of minutes’ difference between twins’ births can change the Moon’s nakshatra and the degree it is passing through, shifting the cycle of periods and the length of time each twin spends in them.
Even if the nakshatra remains the same, its degree shifts, meaning the younger twin will likely finish the first planetary period earlier and enter the next one sooner. This leads to differences in external events — for example, one twin may feel the desire to marry, move abroad, or master a new profession earlier than the other.
The Olsen sisters were born just two minutes apart, and the difference in the change of their planetary periods is very small — only a few days.
Many events in their lives occur simultaneously, or at least under very similar circumstances.
Filming in early childhood
From 9 months old, the sisters filmed the series Full House (for 8 consecutive years), and later other children’s projects.
🔹 Astrological view:
From the age of 3, both entered the major period of Venus.

- Venus in the 1st house activated personal qualities — charm and artistry.
- It also activated the 11th house — fame, popularity, and income from show business.
The youngest producers
At age 6 they launched the media brand Dualstar. By 2002 they were on the Forbes list, and by 2007 in the top 11 richest women in the industry.
Astrological view:
- At age 6, the Sun sub-period activated within the Venus dasha.
- The Sun in Taurus and Mrigashira nakshatra continued to bring results through the 11th house — profit, success, fame, and a combination of financial stability and creativity.
Recognition in Forbes
From 2002 onward — included in the ranking of the 100 most influential celebrities.
Astrological view:
- Venus–Saturn period. Saturn is strong in Navamsa (D9) and exalted in Dashamsa (D10), and active by transit through the 11th house → delivers the fruits of karma in11th house of gains and awards.
- Saturn in D10 aspects and activates the ruler of the Dashamsa, the ruler of the 11th house in the natal Rasi chart, and the 11th house of the D10 chart.
- Saturn conjunct transit Rahu → expansion of opportunities.
- Jupiter transiting the Ascendant → support for the personality and growth of authority.

Each Person’s Choice
The birth chart shows the karma of past lives, the programs, and conditionings of our consciousness. However, we can still choose how we go about this karma — and what actions we take.
Both twins may have Jupiter in Libra, but one may choose to become a fair judge, while the other becomes a criminal authority working on shady deals. It goes without saying that their lives will turn out differently.
The examples in this analysis show how Vedic astrology explains both the similarities and the differences in the lives of twins born just two minutes apart.
If you know such cases — brothers or sisters who are twins with similar or, on the contrary, very different destinies — share them in the comments.
