The Secrets of Planning Your Week with Vedic Astrology

Vedic astrology is divided into several major branches. Janma kundali focuses on natal astrology — the study of a person’s life and destiny through their birth chart. Mundane astrology examines geopolitical matters and the fate of nations. Horary astrology specializes in predictive techniques for answering specific questions. Today, I’d like to talk a little about the Muhurta branch.

Muhurta branch

You’ve probably noticed that the energy of each day feels different. On some days we feel outgoing and easily connect with the world, while on others we can’t muster the energy to leave the house. There are days when everything flows smoothly and things get done easily, and days when nothing seems to work and it’s hard to concentrate even on the simplest tasks. One day you go shopping and can’t find anything you like, but on another day you discover great things — and at a good price too. Why does this happen?

The reason is that celestial bodies influence us every single day. This influence varies greatly — from the planets that rule each day of the week, to planetary transits, and of course, the Moon’s movement through its cycle. The ruling planets of the weekdays set the overall tone of the day, the Moon’s phase affects our energy levels, and its transit through a zodiac sign determines the themes our mind will naturally resonate with on that day.

Muhurta studies exactly how these factors — and many others — interact to determine the most suitable time for any activity. It’s impossible to cover this vast subject in one article, so today I’ll focus on just one of its key principles: how to best plan your week based on each weekday’s planetary ruler.

Why the days of the week?

The varas (Sanskrit for “weekdays”) are one of the five components of the Vedic lunar calendar known as the Panchang. The Panchang helps determine the overall auspiciousness of a day and which types of activities are most favorable on that day.

The vara, or weekday, is the most important factor in understanding the general energy of the day, because each weekday is dominated by the energy of one specific planet — and that’s what we’ll explore today.

Before describing the activities best suited to each day, I want to emphasize that the information below is quite general. The actual favorability of a day for a particular action depends on many other factors — primarily your individual planetary periods (dashas) and the specific transits affecting your chart.

Therefore, for truly important undertakings — such as a wedding, conceiving a child, starting a business, or buying real estate — it’s always best to consult a professional Vedic astrologer.

Sunday – Sun

The Vedic week begins on Sunday, which may feel a bit unusual for people from Western cultures. However, from the perspective of natural rhythms, starting the weekly cycle on Sunday is actually more harmonious for our lives.

Sunday is ruled by the Sun — the planet connected with self-expression and our inner spirit. On Sundays, rising early with the sunrise is especially beneficial. It helps charge the body and mind with prana (life force), which supports health, longevity, and positive actions.

Any activities aimed at strengthening physical health are favorable on Sunday: sports, breathing techniques, fresh air walks and so on.

Sunday is also a great day for planning the week or month ahead, or for any actions that lay the groundwork for a successful week.

Visiting a temple, a church, or other place of worship is considered auspicious, since the Sun is linked to the spirit and the evolution of soul and consciousness.

Actions that express respect and reverence toward your father, male relatives, or authority figures are especially beneficial. Simply making it a habit to call your father on Sundays, check on his well-being, give him attention, and help when needed can greatly harmonize the Sun’s energy in your life.

Sunday is considered a neutral day, so it’s not the best time to start particularly important new projects.

What you definitely shouldn’t do on Sunday is be lazy, sleep until noon, or show disrespect toward your father, authority figures, or those in positions of power.

Monday – Moon

Monday is the day of the Moon. Its nature is feminine, emotional, and changeable, which is why on Mondays we tend to feel more sensitive and emotional than on other days.

The Moon is naturally connected with home and domestic life, so Monday is best dedicated to household matters. It’s an excellent day for everyday chores: cleaning and decorating your home, cooking delicious meals, organizing your living space, and taking care of family members, pets, and plants.

Of course, in the modern world we usually start the work week on Monday, so it may not always be possible. Still, try to arrange your schedule so that Monday has a lighter workload and leaves more room for home and family.

Another reason to make Monday a home-focused day is the Moon’s connection with mental health, emotional comfort, and overall sense of happiness in life. On Mondays we become more impressionable, emotional, and sensitive, so interacting with a large number of people can negatively affect our mental state. It’s better to surround yourself with loved ones and avoid difficult or draining people on Mondays.

Mondays are great for spending time with family, children, or your mother. If you’re in therapy, Monday is an excellent day for emotional work and supporting your mental health.

Time in nature, walks near water, or any contact with water (baths, swimming) is also very beneficial on Mondays. These activities help clear the mind and restore inner peace. Any meditative practice feels especially good on this day.

Monday is considered a neutral day overall, but it is generally not auspicious for new beginnings — especially those that require long-term stability or continuous effort. Because the Moon is a changeable planet, there’s a high risk that you’ll lose interest, change your priorities, or simply run out of energy to maintain something that you started on Monday.

It’s also best to avoid making major life decisions, interactions with difficult people, consuming alcohol or other substances, or “feeding” the mind with negativity (heavy news, dark movies or shows, comparing yourself to others on social media, etc.). While we can’t always control everything we encounter, we can at least consciously limit stressors to protect our mental health.

Tuesday – Mars

The energy of Tuesday is very different from Monday’s, as this day is ruled by an active planet Mars.

Of all the days of the week, Tuesday has the highest potential for action and productivity. It’s wise to use this energy for achievements.

A good practice is to schedule your most challenging and demanding tasks for Tuesday — this is when you’re most likely to have the drive, initiative, and willpower to overcome difficulties. Otherwise, Mars’ active energy can spill over into conflict, irritability, and unproductive tension for everyone around you.

Tuesdays are excellent for strength training and intense workouts. Mars is the planet of sports, and on its day we often have more physical energy to work on the body. You can also plan physically demanding tasks for Tuesday — such as rearranging furniture, packing for the move, gardening work, and so on.

If you work in a competitive environment or participate in tenders and pitches, try to schedule important meetings and presentations on Tuesday, when your competitive edge is at its strongest.

Tuesday is also suitable for vehicle repairs, real estate transactions, construction work, and surgical operations — as well as any actions that require courage and strong willpower. If you need to stand up for yourself, defend your position, or set clear boundaries, Tuesday is the best day to do it.

Tuesday is considered to have somewhat unfavorable overall energy, which is why it’s best used for difficult tasks that demand energy and bravery, as described above.

This day is not suitable for weddings, dates, friendly or diplomatic interactions, or starting important new projects.

Wednesday – Mercury

The energy of Wednesday is noticeably lighter than the previous days. This is because Wednesday is ruled by Mercury — a planet with light, agile energy that directs our mind toward business, communication, and learning.

Wednesday is ideal for any intellectual activity. Studying new subjects, learning new skills, or using your wit and cleverness will go much more smoothly on Wednesday than on other days.

It’s best to schedule your most important meetings and client work for Wednesday. The Mercurial energy of the day helps create good rapport and strengthens connections. Important business matters, signing contracts, closing deals, negotiations, and sales are all favored on Wednesday. There’s a higher chance of reaching favorable terms for all parties.

Wednesday is generally good for networking and relaxed, informal communication with friends and like-minded people. Mercury also governs humor, so the atmosphere tends to be light and cheerful during casual interactions.

On Wednesday, it’s better not to tackle overly complex or large-scale tasks — this can lead to anxiety and mental exhaustion. The main mood of the day should be light and interesting.

Overall, Wednesday is considered an auspicious day, especially for communication, connections, finance, advertising, and learning. The key is not to overwork yourself or overload your mind.

Thursday – Jupiter

Thursday is considered the most auspicious day of the week because it is ruled by Jupiter, the most benevolent planet.

This is a day that generally supports starting large-scale, long-term projects and important life chapters. I deliberately emphasize “generally” because it’s essential to check other factors in the Vedic calendar and your personal chart before deciding that the day is favorable for your specific big undertaking.

In general, Thursday is favorable for launching important projects, starting a business, buying real estate, getting married, signing significant contracts, making financial investments, conceiving a child, and other important beginnings.

On a more everyday level, Thursday is great for quality time with children. It’s a good “family day.”

It’s also an excellent day to begin studies — especially in the fields of religion, philosophy, psychology, or any kind of law. Interacting with teachers, authority figures, bosses, bankers, government officials, or spiritual leaders is favored. Practicing your faith and visiting places of worship is beneficial. Creative activities also go well on Thursday.

It’s considered auspicious to express generosity and kindness on Thursdays: doing good deeds, donating to charity, and helping those in need.

Because Jupiter carries the energy of expansion, it’s best to avoid conflicts, showing disrespect (especially toward elders or people in authority), or taking on debt and loans on Thursdays. Such actions can create negative financial karma.

Friday – Venus

It’s no wonder many people look forward to Friday — it is ruled by Venus, the planet of beauty, love, and pleasure.

Friday is the perfect day for a little hedonism and celebration of  life. This is when you can truly pamper yourself, as Venus brings enjoyment into our lives.

It’s the best day of the week for romance and dating. You can plan marriage proposals and weddings for Friday. In general, anything connected with romance and relationships benefits from being scheduled on Friday.

Friday is great for spending time with girlfriends in a female circle, soft and diplomatic communication, and building connections. This is the day when your charisma is at its peak and you can present yourself in the most attractive way.

Friday is ideal for shopping, beauty treatments, and anything that creates beauty. It’s the best day for expensive acquisitions — especially jewelry, art, luxury items, real estate, and cars.

On Fridays, inspiration and sensuality tend to increase, making it a wonderful day for creative work. If you’re lacking inspiration, cultural events or visits to beautiful places can help. Cultivating a sense of beauty and developing good taste are also auspicious on Fridays.

On Friday, it’s not recommended to overload yourself with work or impose too many restrictions. The energy of the day is pleasant, gentle, and abundant.

Saturday – Saturn

Saturday completes the weekly cycle and carries the energies of Saturn.

The best way to spend Saturday is in calm, reflective, introverted rest. Saturn is a strict and ascetic planet that values solitude and detachment from worldly affairs.

On Saturday, you can review the past week or month, write in a reflection journal, or practice meditation. It’s the best day to disconnect from the world and simply be in the present moment. Practicing tapas, creating voluntary commitments for yourself, or fulfilling your duties are all very beneficial. If you’ve been wanting a digital detox day — Saturday is the perfect choice.

Any practices that cultivate discipline, asceticism, and self-restraint strengthen Saturn’s positive influence. This can include a digital detox, fasting, a vow of silence, or other similar practices.

Saturdays are favorable for helping elderly people. Spending time with your grandparents or aging parents, volunteering at senior homes, or any service-oriented activity done in a spirit of service and humility are especially auspicious.

Saturday is considered unfavorable for material affairs. Creative projects, major purchases, weddings, and active social life are better reserved for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Indulging in hedonism of any kind on Saturday is a particularly bad idea. It’s best to avoid alcohol, parties, and sensory pleasures so you can build a constructive relationship with Saturn’s disciplined energy.
