Soul Purpose Myth

Why do we search for purpose, and what’s really behind it? Three types of motivation behind purpose-related inquiries, why you don’t actually need to chase it, and what karmic debts have to do with all this.

Lately, the idea of “life purpose” and “karmic tasks” or “karmic debts” has become incredibly popular in the astrology and spirituality narratives. The message is simple: do something meaningful, find what brings you joy, solve your karmic debts, fix your life—and happiness will follow. This kind of messaging lands especially well with achievement-driven millennials. But let’s take a closer look at what these “purpose” questions are really about.

People usually consider the idea of purpose in three main scenarios.

THE SEARCH FOR A MEANINGFUL CAREER

The first scenario is when someone uses “purpose” and “career” interchangeably. This isn’t really about philosophy or trying to understand karmic debts. Rather, this type of inquiry is more practical, when what you’re really looking for is a profession, a pastime or an activity that you’re good at—something that fulfills you.

In this case, the question becomes a practical one, where you’re looking for a suitable and fulfilling profession at this stage of life. Most of us don’t have just one perfect thing we’re meant to do. The range of possible careers and paths is so vast that no one could ever fully grasp it all.

Your personal development, mindset, life context, and experience will shape what suits you. Your birth chart and planetary periods can also point to directions worth exploring and highlight your potential.

If this resonates with you, a career or vocation that fulfllls you should answer your need for purpose. Astrology can help you explore the possible options in a career-focused reading.

THE CHASE FOR HAPPINESS

The second scenario is a restless search for happiness—for that inner feeling of “this is enough.”

Here, a person believes that if they just understand their purpose—why they’re here, what their big task is—they’ll finally be able to relax. They imagine that clarity will bring happiness, recognition, maybe even a better quality of life, and most importantly, a sense that everything is finally figured out. No more confusion, no more problems.

But that’s not how it works.

On a cosmic level, there is some truth to this idea. At a certain point—when the body dies and the soul has experienced all of its karma—it may reach a peaceful state of simply “being” and contentment. When the soul releases all material desires and recognizes its connection to the Divine, it can exit the cycle of rebirth and return “home,” to divine consciousness.

What a person is actually feeling when they search for this kind of purpose is their soul’s call to evolve and to move toward a higher state of awareness. The final destination of that path is liberation from the cycle of rebirth. In Buddhism, this state is called nirvana; in Hinduism, moksha.

Not all of us will reach that in this lifetime. And most people aren’t even trying to rush into enlightenment—and that’s completely okay.

If your search for purpose is driven by this deeper need, you may not need an astrologer to explain your karmic debts as much as you need to pause and ask yourself: where am I rushing to, and why? Therapy can help here. If you want to go a bit more spiritual, you can explore how the universe works and what the soul really is—through yoga, mindfulness, or spiritual study.

Sacred texts (the Bible, the Quran, the Bhagavad Gita), yogic philosophy, Vedic astrology, or any system that resonates with you can support this exploration.

Most importantly, move toward awareness at your own pace. You will experience a full spectrum of physical and emotional states, have varying priorities and learnings from experiences that life will present you. Simply living your life—and noticing what you learn about yourself along the way—is already part of your evolution.

SELF-DISCOVERY

The third scenario is related to the second, but it is simpler. You just want to understand yourself better.

Maybe there are parts of your personality asking for attention or expression. It could be a suppressed part of you—your shadow self that holds hidden potential. Or a blind spot—something about you that you don’t even realize exists. A birth chart, when studied deeply, can shed light on these layers beautifully.

Here, the real intention is self-discovery, though not necessarily in a purely spiritual sense.

It’s important to clarify why you want this insight right now. Each person is an entire universe with many facets, talents, and possibilities. “I just want to know myself” is too broad to explore in a single session.

But “I’m not sure I’m with the right partner,” or “I don’t feel fulfilled in my work,” or any specific concern—that’s where astrology becomes truly useful.

And if you’re ready to dive deep into your own inner ocean, one consultation won’t be enough. It helps to choose a system that resonates with you—Jyotish, numerology, human design, Jungian psychology, neurographica—or combine a few, and explore yourself through them over time.

So what’s the takeaway?

The idea of soul purpose and karmic debts is a convenient entry point into exploring your life. But it’s important to remember: the soul’s true purpose is one—to realize its divine nature and transcend the cycle of rebirth.

Everything else is your mind sending you on a quest for more experience in the material world—experience that, one way or another, brings us closer to the exit from the rebirth cycle. In that sense, every life experience is karmic.

And if you’re not quite ready for spiritual liberation or letting go of all material desires, self-discovery is a powerful and meaningful step along the way.

If you recognize yourself in one of these scenarios, working through it with the right framework makes things much clearer.
